Welsh Slate Splitter’s Stool

A really rather wonderful, primitive, Welsh slate splitter’s stool in oak.

The best example I’ve handled: hewn in oak with recesses to hold the slate, the whole raised on four squat legs.

Untouched with the best, natural character and time worn, dry surface.

Caernarfonshire, C19th

For similar examples from the region see ‘Welsh Furniture 1250-1950’, Richard Bebb, volume 1, p31.

Measurements: H: 29.5” (75cm); W: 13” (33cm); D: 15” (38cm).
