The Taylor Sisters of Devon, c1825.

An early C19th, English provincial school, oil on canvas portrait of two sisters in a coastal landscape.

The sitters are identified by a label to the reverse as Mrs Fortescue of Fallopit and Mrs Walter Palk Carew”.

They are further identified as “The other two sisters of Miss Portal and Mrs …. Georgina Lady Willoughby de Broke”

Anne Frances Taylor and Georgina Jane Taylor were among the children of Major-General Thomas William Taylor of Ogwell House in Devon, an officer of the Honourable East India Company at Madras, and later Lt-Gov of the Royal Military College, Sandhurst and a Groom of the Bedchamber to William IV.

Anne Frances later married Sir Walter Palk Carew, 8th Baronet of Haccombe, Devon.

Georgina Jane would go on to marry Robert Verney , 17th Baron Willoughby de Broke of Compton Verney, Warwickshire.

At the time of writing I have yet to fully identify their other sister, later known as Mrs Fortescue of Fallopit.

Unframed, the painting measures: H: 18” (46cm); W: 16” (41cm).
