A handsome oak bookcase made by the renowned Brynmawr Furniture Makers and designed by Paul Matt.
The ‘Brynmawr Experiment’ was a furniture making enterprise set up by a group of Quakers to relieve the mass unemployment in the south Wales valleys in the late 1920s.
The Cotswolds school influenced designs of Paul Matt, coupled with high quality craftsmanship meant the enterprise was a resounding success.
Though short-lived (the factory closed in 1940 following the outbreak of WWII) it marked a fascinating chapter in the social and artistic history of Wales.
