Naive Study of the Infant St John with the Lamb

After Bartolome Esteban Murillo (1617-1682), a charming, naive, study on oak panel of the Infant Saint John the Baptist with a lamb.

The lamb is recognised as symbol of Christ’s sacrifice, according to the Gospel, when Saint John met Christ he declared: ‘Behold, the Lamb of God’.

Although naive in style, the composition is almost identical to Murillo’s work of 1660-65, one of his most popular paintings, which was acquired by the National Gallery in 1840.

Probably English and late C18th or early C19th.
Presented in an C18th ebonised and gilt frame.

Measurements: H: 22” (55.5cm); W: 17.75” (45cm).
