A striking, large, late C19th pier head painting of the barque ‘Meinwen’.
A wonderfully naive depiction which fills the canvas, in a style reminiscent of the famous Cornish fisherman artist Alfred Wallis.
The steel barque ‘Meinwen’ was built in 1892 by R&J Evans and Company, Liverpool forJG Evans‘ Meinwen Ship Co.
The ship was registered in Liverpool and predominantly sailed between Britain and Australia.
She was sold to a Norwegian shipping company in 1910 and was renamed ‘Alfhild’.
Gouache on canvas, c1895. Framed and glazed.
Measurements: H: 30.75” (78cm); W: 43.5”” (110.5m).
