Irish Hedge Chair

A late C19th or early C20th Irish hedge chair, constructed in ash and pine, dry scraped to reveal traces of a pale grey painted finish.

Though primitive in appearance, this example is quite sophisticated in its construction with mortise and tenon joints securing the struts that support the boarded seat, scrolled arms and detailing to the legs and uprights.

Chairs with this type of composite seat construction are typically associated with Ulster, in particular County Antrim (see Claudia Kinmouth, Irish Country Furniture and Furnishings 1750-2000).

The chair’s strength is bolstered by the interlocking of the corner spindles through the armrest, a feature, as noted by Kinmouth, typical of hedge chairs seen throughout Ireland.

It is a very good, usable size and is in good, solid condition with only some evidence of historic woodworm and a single, accomplished old tip repair to one of the rear legs.

Irish, c1900.

Measurements: H: 29.5” (79.5cm); H to seat: 15.75” (40cm); W: 20.75” (63cm); D: 16” (41cm).
