C18th North Country Oak Settle

A substantial mid C18th oak settle from the North West of England.

A fine piece of English oak furniture constructed using slabs of the best timber. Rich colour and aged patina.

An unusually decorative example with enclosed sides, baluster front legs and shaped frieze to the panel back.

Rope strung seat supports – this type of deep seated settle was found in coaching inns and often used as a bed for the night by a travelling coachman. The tighter the ropes, the better the rest, hence the phrase ‘sleep tight’.

Finished with a bespoke squab cushion and bolsters in pale grey linen.

English, c1760.

Measurements: H 37.5” (96cm); W: 75.5” (192cm); D: 27” (69cm).
