An C18th Italian School oil on canvas study of the Penitent Magdalene, after Titian.
A somewhat naive but nevertheless charming old picture.
Composition as per Titian’s original, which hung in the Barbarigo Gallery in Venice until it was sold to The Hermitage in St Petersburg in 1850, with open book and momento mori skull in the foreground and twilight landscape beyond.
Canvas has been re-stretched in the early C20th and there are a few old repairs and small areas of loss and retouching, unframed.
Measurements: H: 25” (64cm); W: 19.75” (50cm).
