Polar Exploration Sledge

£1,595.00

An early C20th Polar Expedition sledge. A true museum piece.

Believed to have been most recently used in the Oxford University Arctic Expedition of 1935-36, supported by the Royal Society, the Royal Geographical Society and The War Office, and led by A.R. (Sandy) Glen (leader and glaciologist); and N.A. Croft (second in command, photographer and chief dog driver); the main aim of which was to make an accurate survey of the north coast of North East Land (Nordaustlandet).

Glen and Croft’s account of the expedition was published in ‘Under the Pole Star’ (Methuen, 1937).

The sledge was subsequently given, for display,to a London shop which had provided radio equipment for the expedition and has since passed down through the family.

It has never before been available for sale.
