Parramatta, 1866

A lovely C19th oil on canvas (laid onto board) study of the merchant vessel Parramatta.

Built by James Laing of Sunderland for shippers Devitt and Moore, Parramatta was launched in May 1866 and carried wool and other goods between Britain and Australia and America.

On 12 January 1898 Parramatta sailed from Galveston, Texas, laden with pitch-pine, bound for King’s Lynn in Norfolk.

She would never arrive and was never heard of again.

The painting is Indistinctly monogrammed and dated, lower right.

Presented in its original gilt frame, the ship is identified by a label to the reverse.

An inscription to the reverse attributes the painting to famed Scottish maritime artist William Clark but this appears later and almost certainly erroneous.

Measurements (including frame): H: 19.25” (49cm); 25.25” (64cm).
