A particularly good mid C19th seaman’s chest in its original black and green painted finish with original beckets and rope twist handles.
The interior of the lid is decorated with a seascape, the name of the original owner, one Fred Brotherton, and a pair of red ensign flags, the whole flanked by a pair of curtains.
Included with the chest is Mr Brotherton’s cosh (more romantically known as a ‘Bosun’s persuader’) along with a collection of certificates of discharge from the various ships upon which he sailed.
This is furniture, folk art and maritime history rolled into one.
